Time Travel to the Stone Age (Neanderland)

Between Düsseldorf, Cologne and the Ruhr area lies the Neanderland. 160 years ago, this valley was the scene for one of the most sensational archaeological finds ever. Here, the bones of a Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) were found, our mysterious ancestor. While the skeleton may be ancient, the museum housing it is modern and fun for the whole family.

In the valleys around, streams run through deep forests, European bison graze on the wide meadows. The numerous small trails make great conditions for hikers, and there are plenty of options for bikers, too.

The “Niederbergbahn” train used to clatter through the area in the 1920s. Now, a perfectly flat bike path has been laid over the old tracks, leading cyclists over historic bridges and viaducts with great views. Enjoy this beautiful ride (suitable for all ages) from Heiligenhaus in Velbert via Wülfrath all the way to Haan.

TIP: Make sure to plan some time for the Neandertal Museum and check out how our ancestors used to live in this area.

ROUTE: The total route from Essen-Kettwig to Wuppertal-Vohwinkel (both easily accessible with the train) is 40km long. You can easily plan a day trip and still have enough time for sightseeing.

Get your Adrenalin Kick in the Forest of the Eifel (Aachen area)

South of the city of Aachen, with its world-famous cathedral, a huge network of the coolest mountain-bike trails run through the hilly forest of the Eifel. Just perfect for anyone who is ready to free their mind and hang out in the cool bars of the hip college town after.

Volcanos created the bizarre landscape of the Eifel, dominated by plateaus and rugged mountains. Thick forest reaches down to the valleys where small timbered houses nestle along streams.
