Hamburg Port Anniversary 2026: What’s It All About?

Every year, the people of Hamburg celebrate their port. No wonder—after all, it’s the source of the city’s prosperity. That’s why the annual event is marked by a pretty big celebration. Find out here what’s on the program for the 837th Hamburg Port Anniversary.

What is the Hamburg Port Anniversary?

From May 8 to 10, 2026, Hamburg will be all about the Port Anniversary (“Hafengeburtstag”). With this event, the Hanseatic city commemorates the founding of the port, which is said to have taken place on May 7, 1189. Whether that’s exactly how it happened—there’s plenty of evidence suggesting the historical document is a forgery—doesn’t matter. Because it’s certainly enough of a reason to celebrate.

What’s on the Program for the 2026 Port Anniversary?

The Port Anniversary stretches along the northern bank of the Elbe, from the Fish Market past the “Landungsbrücken” to the “Speicherstadt”. And there’s plenty going on on the river itself, too. The absolute highlight year after year is the spectacular fleet of ships that sail into the city for the Port Anniversary.

From rustic steamers to ultra-modern cruise ships, every class of vessel imaginable is represented. Sailing enthusiasts will be delighted by the “Staatsraad Lehmkuhl.” This sailing ship, which is over 100 years old, now serves as a training ship for the Royal Norwegian Navy and is coming from Bergen to the Elbe. The cruise ship “Mein Schiff 7,” with an impressive length of 315 meters, presents a much more modern look. Military enthusiasts, on the other hand, will be on the lookout for the British frigate “HMS Sutherland.”

But the absolute highlight on the water this year is once again the “tugboat ballet,” a dance performed by tugboats on the water. On May 9, from 3:15 to 4:00 p.m., several of the small boats will perform a choreographed routine to classical music. And they’ll do so with an elegance you wouldn’t expect from ships with up to 3,000 horsepower.

The Program for the 2026 Port Anniversary Away From the Water

A visit to the Port Anniversary is also more than entertaining on land. Three flea markets offer a wealth of treasures and antiques: at the Fish Auction Hall on May 8 and 9, at the pontoon in the Museum Harbor on May 8, 9, and 10, and at the “Michelwiesen” on May 9 and 10.

Hamburg’s museums are also part of the Port Anniversary. At the U-434 Submarine Museum, however, visitors shouldn’t be afraid of confined spaces. Fortunately, that’s not a problem at the “Speicherstadt” Museum. Guided tours through the “Speicherstadt” or the seaport offer special insights into the hustle and bustle of the Port of Hamburg. Visitors don’t usually get to see the secured areas of the port terminal, so this is a unique opportunity.

Program for Children at the Hamburg Port Anniversary 2026

The Port Anniversary is also a great event for children. At “Open Ship,” young and old “part-time sailors” can climb aboard numerous historic ships and sailboats and ask the crew as many questions as they like. A visit to the bridge or the engine room is particularly impressive. The berths of the accessible ships are located at the Landungsbrücken, the Überseebrücke, the Brandenburger Hafen, the Museumshafen Oevelgönne, the Sandtorhafen in HafenCity, the Hansahafen, the quays, and the Johannisbollwerk.

At the “Speicherstadt” Museum, kids can discover the world of raw materials and trade that still shapes Hamburg today through the “Kalle, de lütte Quartiersmann” scavenger hunt. And at “Miniaturwunderland”, just like on the Elbe, a “tugboat ballet” is performed—albeit on a very, very small scale.

Sports and Activities for Young Guests

But kids don’t just want to look at ships—they also want to let off some steam. To make that happen, the “Michelwiese” transforms into a first-class children’s paradise with opportunities to jump and climb. Various sports can also be tried out on the new “HafenSport” adventure island at the Schaartor Lock. On Sunday morning, there’s even a 1.8-kilometer loop along the Bunte Hafenmeile for children between the ages of six and twelve. (Advance registration required)
