The Best Spots for Vegan Fish Sandwiches

text
Lisa-Kristin Erdt

Fish-free alternatives to classic fish sandwiches are popping up at fish sandwich stalls. From Glücksburg and Travemünde to Holstein Switzerland, we have put together a selection of the best vegetarian and vegan fish sandwiches at the German coast.

Fish-free snacks along the coast

The arrival of vegan alternatives to fish sandwiches is long overdue. After all, the trend towards a plant-based diet is growing rapidly. Last but not least, a rethink in the way we treat marine animals for ecological reasons is helping to make fish-free options increasingly popular.

Another advantage is that vegan alternatives are creating new, sophisticated flavor combinations that imitate the taste of the coast with other seafood or replace it entirely. The term “alternative” therefore does not really do justice to these new creations, as they are “definitely worth trying” in their own right. Those who prefer a classic fish roll will of course still find what they are looking for at the following five addresses.

Maritime Cauliflower Roll at the Seegold Fischeria in Grömitz

Carmen Falkenthal and her team welcome their guests to the Seegold Fischeria in Grömitz for a break or a quick bite to eat. In their vegan version of the fish roll, the taste of the sea is not neglected: cauliflower plays the leading role between two halves of the roll, which gets its maritime signature from aromatic seaweed spice. A sweet and spicy, purely vegan agave syrup and mustard sauce adds even more complexity to this fish roll variant.

Address: Seestraße 17 a, 23743 Grömitz

Fish Innovation at Mehrfisch in Eckernförde

The bar front consists of an old overseas container, the counter in the dining room is a converted wooden cabin cruiser: the Mehrfisch in Eckernförde lives the coastal theme. The bistro not only offers twice as much space, but also fish-free fish and chips called “fish from the field”. Most of the products are regional, organic and come from fair trade.

Harbour Panorama with Vegan Delights at Fisch-Bar Hauswald

The Hauswald family offers a wide range of lovingly prepared specialties made from fresh fish on the menu of the fish bar. Full-blooded fisherman Lars Hauswald has also developed a creation of seed rolls with avocado, vegan mayonnaise and apple chutney for his vegetarian, vegan and adventurous guests. The panoramic view of Niendorf harbour makes for the perfect dining experience, especially at sunset – perhaps accompanied by a wine from the Rheinterrassenhof winery?

Feel at Home at the Tohuus in Eutin

Chatting, music and good food: The guys from Tohuus – which means “at home” in Low German – love the whole package and have turned this concept into a business model. The restaurant is very cozy, and it only gets better with a lovingly prepared (fish) sandwich. Most of the ingredients come from the region and the warm, crispy rolls are freshly baked every day by the baker next door. The vegan special: steamed and marinated carrot strips in the roll, which are supposed to imitate smoked salmon. The motto “No Wi-Fi, just talk” provides the right atmosphere – nice, isn’t it?

Vegetarian and vegan with a sea view at the Stranddüne in Scharbeutz

The white sandy beach of Scharbeutz is calling! For 20 years, the Stranddüne in Scharbeutz has been tempting beachgoers to enjoy one of its popular (vegan) fish sandwiches with a view of the Bay of Lübeck. The vegan fish sandwich with pea puree and the vegetarian fish and chips, for example, are completely fish-free.
