If you’re looking for a getaway in the countryside between Lake Constance, Ulm, and Augsburg, you don’t have to look far. The Allgäu is right on your doorstep! But even for those in need of a break who live farther away, the trip to southern Germany is well worth it. We know of four places you shouldn’t miss on a trip to the Allgäu.
The Allgäu is a region where travelers can simply leave all their everyday worries behind. Because everything here is just right: beautiful nature, easy access, and warm hospitality.
Rösslerhof: Apple pie, 70 dairy cows, and not a single neighboring building
It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic rural setting than the Rösslerhof. The farm, whose roots date back to the distant 13th century, is run today by the Güldenberg family. To get there, you have to navigate a narrow road winding through meadows and pastures, as the farm stands completely on its own. No neighboring buildings obstruct the view of nature.

Once there, guests can look forward to excellent hospitality. The Güldenbergs not only run the farm—with some 70 dairy cows and plenty of arable land—but also their own guesthouse. The farm features five cozy vacation apartments, a farm shop with organic foods, and a small café. And what could bring more peace and quiet to a beautiful summer day than a homemade apple cake and an aromatic cappuccino?

Rößlerweiher: A swimming lake in the Allgäu with an 11th-century canal
Just a short distance from the Rösslerhof lies the Rößlerweiher. This small lake is perfect for relaxation. On the southern shore, a pretty beach with a swimming area beckons. The lake is also ideal for hiking. To the north of the lake lies the so-called “Stille Bach.” This is an artificial canal that was built as early as the 11th century by Benedictine monks in the nearby village of Weingarten. At just over eleven kilometers long, the canal is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. Today, a trail runs along the canal, where hikers can enjoy not only views of nature but also insights into the region’s economic past, thanks to several informational signs.

Bauhofer Cheese Factory: Here, visitors are welcome to watch the cheese-making process
A few kilometers south of the Rösslerhof, the Bauhofer Cheese Factory processes cow’s milk from the region into hearty cheeses. This includes milk from the Güldenberg family’s herd. Belinda Locherer and Marcus Scherler are masters of their craft. And despite all the modern machinery, the work here is done by hand. Visitors can see this for themselves, as the cheesemakers are happy to have observers watch them at work.

But it’s not just about looking good—it has to taste good, too. Thanks to long aging periods and the finest ingredients, that’s exactly what you’ll find at the cheese dairy. Whether it’s Allgäu Emmental, robust mountain cheese, or the house specialty with a chili rind: in the end, guests are spoiled for choice. That’s because the cheeses produced here can be purchased directly in the dairy’s small shop. But there’s really no such thing as a wrong choice.

Hotel Zum Schloss in Amtzell: A 14th-Century Castle Turned Boutique Hotel
If you’re looking for an elegant getaway in the Allgäu, the “Hotel Zum Schloss” in Amtzell is the place for you. The small castle, which has stood on this site since the 14th century, now welcomes guests as an elegant boutique hotel with 18 individually designed rooms. The Fischer family is now in its third generation of managing this historic property. And anyone expecting a staid country inn here will quickly learn otherwise.

As a “bed-and-bike” establishment, the hotel features a bike garage and even rents out its own e-bikes to guests. The highlight of the hotel, however, is the restaurant, where fine dining meets regional specialties. For example, you might find a “Vitello Forello” on your plate, featuring a trout cream instead of a tuna cream. And if you’re looking to take a trip in the area, head to the Heilig-Kreuz Chapel. There, surrounded by nature, your gaze is inevitably drawn to the Alps. It’s a place where truly everyone can find peace and quiet.
