Of Beer and Bavaria: The Best Beer Experiences in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

text
Susanne Jung-Klotz

Bavaria and beer have always been an inseparable duo. The nectar of hops and malt is considered a refreshment, thirst quencher, and overall expression of Bavarian culture. Those vacationing in Bavaria cannot escape experiencing this cultural treasure up close. It is served during brewery tours, beer tastings, or simply after a long day in the fresh mountain air. This holds true in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where some special beer experiences await.

The Art of Brewing

How about combining your vacation in Garmisch with an enlightening brewing course? In the brewery of Biohotel Garmischer Hof, that’s no problem. The Seiwald family, who owns the hotel, and their team introduce visitors to the old Bavarian tradition of brewing, without modern aids such as hop dosing machines or full-automatic appliances. What is created here is liquid gold that can be enjoyed with all the senses.

Next year, a true legend returns to the city! Thanks to new owners, the venerable Garmisch Brewery will reopen its doors after almost 50 years and bring beer culture back to the town. At the foot of the Wetterstein Mountains, brewing courses can be booked. In the meantime, the impatient ones can already book a tour for now and learn more about the rich history of the house.

A Journey Through the World of Beers

It’s crazy to think about but it’s true: Beer exists outside of Bavaria. Those who dare to look beyond the horizon can visit the Bieraterie in the historic Ludwigsstraße. Bar owners Fee and Alina take guests on an exciting journey through the world of hops and malt. The journey takes them from Bavaria to Sweden, England, and even the USA. During individual beer tastings, visitors get to know the different varieties and learn more about the brewing methods. In the associated store, all beers are naturally offered, and you can take your favorite one home as a souvenir!

A few meters away is the second store of the two beer experts. In the soap factory “Die Seifensieder,” they live out their second passion with handmade soaps. And, as it could not be otherwise, a beer soap is, of course, part of the assortment.

The Bavarian Start to the Day

A true Bavarian prefers to drink a delicious glass of beer for breakfast. The “Frühschoppen” is firmly anchored in Bavarian lifestyle, and therefore, the day begins in numerous rustic pubs and inns in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with a “Weißwurst-Frühstück” (white sausage breakfast) and a local beer. Those who want to get to know several taverns can book a culinary tour. During the approximately two and a half hours long tour, participants move from place to place, learning more about the history of gastronomy in Garmisch, and trying various delicacies.

The most Bavarian temptation since chocolate exists

In Garmisch, besides beer specialties, another temptation awaits: The Chocolaterie Amelie offers a large assortment of handmade chocolates, from broken chocolate to nougat and spreads. The renowned pastry chef Linus Kässer always pays attention to the finest ingredients and the best quality, resulting in uniquely delicate creations. Those who want more than just a taste can sign up for the chocolate workshop and learn how the sweet temptations are made. And what does this have to do with beer? Well, one of the bestsellers at Chocolaterie Amelie is the beer praline, a modern Bavarian cultural asset.
