The Best Campsites in Hesse

On the road with your own four walls! Whether in a tent with a sleeping bag or in a luxury caravan, camping is very popular in Germany these days. In Hesse, you will find the right camping site for every kind of camper. We have compiled the most interesting campsites in Hesse here.

Camping in the Ruins of Wallenstein Castle

Campsites in Hesse: In the middle of the Knüllwald forest in northern Hesse, on a spur below the Babloh mountain, lies the medieval ruins of Wallenstein Castle. In the Middle Ages, the castle must have seemed strong and impregnable, for outside the castle walls there is a steep downhill slope on three sides. Today, the castle ruins form the backdrop for rustic camping adventures – camping in the castle or in the castle courtyard, swimming in the lovely natural swimming pool and fishing in the castle pond are all possible.

Below the castle there is a three-star camping site that is also open to permanent campers. The restaurant has genuine Knüllwald specialities on the menu and organises fairytale evenings where the illuminated castle becomes a spectacular sight.

Tent Lodges with Four-Poster Beds

The Odenwaldidyll campsite is located below the snow-white Lichtenberg Castle in the Fischbachtal valley in southern Hesse. Nestled in the varied landscape of the Vorderer Odenwald forest, the site is home to a natural swimming pool fed by nearby springs.

If you want to experience a safari feeling in the Odenwald woods and stay overnight without camping equipment, book one of the two tent lodges. Each tent can accommodate up to five people and offers a four-poster bed with mosquito net, a bunk bed and a single bed. There is even a fully equipped kitchenette and both lodges have their own bathroom.

Those who prefer sturdier walls can rent a caravan at the Odenwaldidyll campsite, also fully equipped. Whether mountain biking or climbing on the cliffs and boulders of the Felsenmeer range, the region offers a varied range of leisure activities for young and old.

Camping in Barrels on the Banks of the Fulda River

This location of one of our favourite campsites in Hessen could hardly be more idyllic. Near Guxhagen, on the narrowest bend of the river Fulda, lies the Fuldaschleife campsite. The site’s facilities include a canoe hire service, a football pitch and children’s playground, and a restaurant with a beer garden. There are also 80 permanent and about 50 tourist pitches, some with a view of the water. Caravans and tents for hire are available for overnight stays on cycle or river tours.

A special overnight experience is sleeping in a “camping barrel“. These large, converted wooden vats offer space for up to three people. Lighting, heating and power sockets provide comfort so that you can enjoy a cosy stay even in cold and damp weather.

Five-Star Camping on Lake Edersee

The Teichmann camping and holiday Park is located directly at the entrance to the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.
