Port de Lumières in Hamburg: What to Expect Here

Since April 9, the Port de Lumières in Hamburg has been open to everyone. Three immersive exhibitions await visitors – and an hour to take a break from everyday life. Younger visitors can let off steam in the Kid’s Atelier.

Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer I” slowly moves across a ten-meter-high wall. Opposite, a video projector displays Klimt’s most famous portrait, “The Kiss”, on the wall. Classical music accompanies the staging, sometimes an overture by Wagner echoes through the loudspeakers, then a symphony by Beethoven. Except for the huge projections, it is dark in the exhibition room.

The visitors to the pre-opening are visibly impressed. Some stand in one place for minutes at a time, or sit on one of the bean bags spread around the room, and let the show beam them into another world.

Opening on April 9

We are at Port de Lumières, Hamburg’s new exhibition center in the HafenCity. The architecture of the building alone is worth a visit: golden elements enhance the brick façade of the “Harbor of Lights,” which is typical of Hamburg. The wave-like design of the façade and the reproduction of a ship’s bow in the main hall reflect the proximity to the harbor. So come on in! The center has been open to the public since April 9 and is set to attract locals and tourists alike.

Exhibitions and prizes

Inside, three immersive exhibitions are presented at the opening. The main exhibition “Gold and Color”, which takes up the majority of the one-hour presentation, with works by Gustav Klimt. The side exhibition “In the Footsteps of the Vienna Secession” – a tribute to the architect and artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. And the experimental work “Journey” by the production studio Nohlab.

All three exhibitions are included in the entrance fee. Adults pay 18 euros, children and young people up to 15 years of age pay 9.90 euros. The family rate (two adults plus two children) is 46 euros.

Kid’s Atelier at Port de Lumières

Children are very welcome at Port de Lumières in Hamburg. Here, they are introduced to art in a playful way – in the Kid’s Atelier, a special room for the youngest visitors. There they can navigate through an animated, multimedia island landscape using three steering wheels, or create designs with the help of templates or simply by drawing freely, which a projector then transfers larger than life onto a 3.5-meter surface. This makes art fun!
