8 Tips for Camping in the Winter

Winter camping is becoming more and more popular. Snowy (and lonely) landscapes, fresh mountain air and proximity to ski slopes make this a special kind of trip. But there are a few things to keep in mind to make your winter adventure a success. Here are our top tips for a successful winter camping trip.

The right equipment is essential

A winterized motorhome is the basis for any winter camping adventure. Make sure that your water pipes and tanks are sufficiently heated. If the waste water tank cannot be heated inside, leave the drain tap open and place a bucket underneath – this way you can then dispose of the waste water efficiently and more easily as a block of ice. And it won’t freeze in the tank and possibly damage it.

Take enough gas with you

Nothing is worse than shivering on vacation. Heating and warm drinks are therefore essential. Plan on about two to three days for every 11 kilograms of gas, depending on the size of the vehicle, insulation and outside temperature. Use only winter gas, as it works reliably even at temperatures below freezing.

Protection from the cold and wet

Three cheers for an awning. It’s worth its weight in gold. It protects the entrance area from snow and cold winds and provides space for drying wet clothes. Of course, it’s also a great place to store equipment from snowshoeing, skiing or sledding. Frost-proof power cables are also part of the basic equipment. If the cable has to cover longer distances, make sure that it is laid in a way that allows it to be plowed under.

Comfort on the campsite

Honestly, we would always choose special winter campsites. After all, it is more than pleasant when the sanitary facilities are heated, there are drying rooms for ski clothing and – what a luxury – even saunas. If you value such amenities, you should book early – especially in popular winter sports regions.

Park your vehicle safely

It may sound obvious, but winter is a slippery time. Park your motorhome safely to avoid problems when the thaw sets in. Place large boards under the jacks, release the handbrake and put the vehicle in first gear to prevent the brake from freezing.

Vehicle safety on the road

Winter tires with a minimum tread depth of four millimeters are a must. Pack snow chains and, of course, your windshield wiper fluid needs to have sufficient antifreeze. Just a quick reminder: don’t forget helpful accessories such as an ice scraper, broom and snow shovel.

Drive with foresight

Take care on icy roads. Reduce your speed and keep a safe distance to increase your braking distance and minimize hazards.

Use checklists

A good memory is fantastic. But why torture yourself when a checklist can help. A well-planned packing list ensures that you don’t leave anything important at home. Take a look at the winter camping checklist on Pincamp (in German) – it will help you to prepare optimally.
