If there’s one thing the Franconians know how to do, it’s the art of brewing beer. There is one place where you can get a particularly good idea of this: the Maisel Beer Experience in the middle of Bayreuth. Here’s to a pint!
Finest craftsmanship, freshly bottled
Bayreuth. A trip to the Upper Franconian baroque city is not only worthwhile for Wagnerians. The city center is a real eye-catcher with the New Palace and Court Garden, the Margravial Opera House as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, of course, the Wagner Museum, but the Hermitage, located just outside, is also worth a visit.
A trip to Bayreuth is also worthwhile for other reasons. Especially for beer lovers. The traditional Maisel brewery is based here and has been since 1887. If you want to find out about all the intricacies and details of the brewing craft, then a tour through the time-honoured walls is basically a must. But if you’re expecting a boring, dry tour, you’re way off the mark.
In recent years, the Maisel team has created a real beer paradise on its own premises. The brewery tour goes by the name of “Beer Experience World”. Although beer is no longer brewed here in the middle of the city as production was moved to a larger, more modern site in the 1970s. However, the old buildings and machines are still perfectly preserved and can be visited. And of course you can still taste the results on site. Maisel was only named national brewery of the year by Finest Beer Selection in 2023.
To bed with a full belly
But the beer experience in Bayreuth doesn’t end with the tour. On the premises, you will also find the Liebesbier Restaurant & Bar, which has its own restaurant. And here, as honor demands it, everything revolves around the liquid gold: 21 beers on tap, more than 80 from the bottle, what more could you want? Food, of course! In Bayreuth, food is served in a hearty style to match the drink.
After an eventful day (of beer), tired bones and a full stomach need a good night’s sleep. Bayreuth has also thought of this: the Liebesbier Urban Art Hotel offers modern and well-designed accommodation. 67 rooms and nine apartments, all individually and artistically designed, ensure that your JGA or Wagner fan club can also be accommodated here. Oh, and there’s also a sauna with a panoramic view. Bayreuth Calling.
