Fancy a weekend away with the girls, but no idea where to go? The Upper Franconian cultural metropolis of Bayreuth offers entertainment in style, from royal parks to wellness offers and classical opera festivals. These five highlights should not be missed on your girls’ trip!
Bayreuth’s feminine influences
Influential women have shaped the historic town in Upper Franconia like only Richard Wagner. First and foremost is Margravine Wilhelmine, whose passion for architecture had a decisive influence on the town’s development. We have her to thank not only for the Hermitage, but also for the Margravial Opera House. The latter was a kind of wedding present for her daughter – quite generous! Empress Sisi herself and the pianist Cosima Wagner, daughter of Franz Liszt, also left their mark here. Many women still do the same today, whether as directors of the festival or mayors. To find out more about Bayreuth’s feminine side, we recommend the city tour “Bayreuth and its women” or a tour with Margravine Wilhelmine herself.
A visit to the royal park
Bavaria’s most beautiful park is in Bayreuth! But the Hermitage, with its romantic gardens and unique water features, is also extremely popular beyond the state’s borders. On a walk along the flowering avenues, visitors also discover all kinds of architectural highlights, such as the Orangery and the Old Palace with its lavishly designed interiors. Fans of the Netflix series “The Empress” will recognise some corners of the park, as Bayreuth and the Hermitage are among the main filming locations. If you want to do the same as the royal actresses, pack a small picnic basket for your visit and settle down in the green countryside. By the way: the Hermitage was actually intended for the margraves’ hunting parties!
Music and architecture in the Margravial Opera House
Bayreuth’s most impressive building is probably the venerable Margravial Opera House. It goes without saying that this Unesco World Heritage Site is a must-see on any visit to the city. The venerable building can be visited during the day, including the World Heritage Information Centre and the Opera House Museum. Here, visitors can learn all about the exciting history of the building. Of course, an evening visit to the opera house is particularly stylish. Here you can listen to classical songs with a glass of champagne all year round. It is best to book tickets in advance for one of the many evening events on the programme at the Margravial Opera House.
Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival
A trip in the first two weeks of September is particularly worthwhile. That’s when the whole city is centred around the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival. Opera singers, string quartets and classical choirs enchant culture enthusiasts with their lovely sounds at every turn. Leading the way are such greats of the classical music scene as Giuseppina Bridelli, Olena Leser and Chiara Brunello. The most popular venues include the Orangery in the Hermitage, the Margravial Opera House and the Palace Church. A very special highlight of the festival is the gala dinner at Colmdorf Castle. There, guests enjoy a four-course meal paired with first-class entertainment against a marvellous backdrop!
Maisel & Friends: A beer tasting in a class of its own
The Maisel brewery is one of the oldest enterprises in Bayreuth. Hops and malt have been refined into liquid gold here for over 100 years. In addition to classic varieties such as Maisel’s Weisse or Bayreuther Hell, the family brewery now also sells creative IPAs. To get an overview for yourself, we recommend an extensive beer tasting. Together with an experienced beer sommelier, participants discover the local beer varieties, paired with snacks and food. Fancy an unusual food pairing? For the adventurous, the brewery offers a tasting with chocolate.
