Feel like “The Empress” at These Locations in Bayreuth

There’s still a little way to go: the Netflix Sisi series “The Empress” will enter its third season at the end of 2026 or perhaps even at the beginning of 2027. But first it has to be filmed, with production starting in September this year. And we know where you can find and visit the filming locations for “The Empress” in Bayreuth.

Close to Nature in the Hermitage

Not quite in the center, but all the greener for it, the Hermitage invites you to take a stroll. Carefully tended avenues provide shade in summer and protection from the cold wind in winter, while the fountains splash playfully. The extensive palace park wraps itself like a green cloak around the Old and New Hermitage Palaces. Please note: not to be confused with the Old and New Palaces in downtown Bayreuth. The palaces and gardens are still maintained in exemplary fashion today (in Bavaria, they don’t let anything slip), and strolling through the grounds, guests can actually feel like they are in a movie or TV series.

Courtly Splendor in the New Palace

But now let’s really visit the New Palace in the city center. Built in the Rococo style (just saying the word gives you an idea of how ornate the magnificent building is: Rrrrrrococo), the palace still exudes an irresistible courtly splendor today. With its breathtaking halls and filigree details, the New Palace still captivates visitors in the 21st century. Although it is almost 300 years old, hats off! Fans of the series will feel particularly enchanted in the Palm Room or the glittering Hall of Mirrors. Oh, what beauty…

A magnificent hall in a castle. The walls are panelled with fine wood, and carved palm trees are placed between the individual sections, their leaves made of golden plates on the ceiling. The floor is parquet, and sunlight shines through the windows on the left side of the hall. Right in the centre of the picture, a double door opens into the next room.

High Culture in the Margravial Opera House

The Margravial Opera House in the middle of the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is such a baroque architectural gem that it is definitely worth a visit. The thought that a Sisi series is now also being filmed there enhances the experience even further. Built entirely of wood and richly decorated, visitors don’t know where to look first. The opera house is so rich in detail, with painted canvases, abundant stucco, and lifelike carvings. If you have time, you can also watch a classical concert in the historic halls. When else would you have the opportunity to do so? If you want to learn more, visit the World Heritage Information Center next door, which has an exhibition on the origins of the opera house and theater practices in the 18th century.

Escape the Hustle and Bustle at Fantaisie Palace

The name says it all: located just outside the city is the summer retreat of the margrave family, Fantaisie Palace. The (relatively) small 18th-century building combines elements of Rococo and Historicism and is now home to Germany’s first garden art museum. Travel broadens the mind, as we all know, and set-jetting is no exception. And in the extensive castle park with its sculptures and fountains, you can then observe what you have learned in natura. We think it’s great!
