Gravelbiking in Saxony just became much more exciting, thanks to the RockHead. We know what it’s all about and why the new route is definitely worth a trip.
320 kilometers of route, divided into seven stages – that’s the RockHead in Saxon Switzerland and Upper Lusatia. The gravel bike route, which was recently presented to the public, is the first multi-day tour in Saxony. And it’s quite a challenge.
From Wehlen, the RockHead leads into the picturesque panorama of Saxon Switzerland (but be careful, eyes always on the trail, please), and then across southern Upper Lusatia to the Zittau Mountains. The name RockHead says it all. The route then leads back to the starting point.
Nature and culture in passing
The route is wonderfully diverse due to the different regions that gravel bikers pass through on the RockHead. Whether it’s fast on asphalt, crunching on forest paths or over hill and dale on dirt roads – it never gets boring when cycling on the seven stages of the new route. And, as is well known, it is also a feast for the eyes. Natural highlights such as the unique rock formations in Saxon Switzerland and the Zittau Mountains are as pleasing to the eye as the romantic Stolpen Castle, the castle and monastery of Oybin or the Herrenhut Unesco World Heritage Site.
The stages vary between 30 and 70 kilometers and between 200 and 1,000 meters of elevation. So there’s something for everyone. The individual routes are easily distinguished by a color system: yellow, green, red, black, orange, blue and purple. Navigation itself can be done quickly and easily using a smartphone or GPS device. The data is freely available online, and the RockHead has also been set up as a tour on Komoot and Outdooractive. Also, bike-friendly accommodation, bike rental stations and e-bike charging stations are listed online, so that basically nothing can go wrong when preparing.
The RockHead starts its first season in spring 2025. A starter pack with a map, stage map and logbook can be purchased on the website.
