Frankfurt is a big city, but it can also be a village. The city has a sophisticated culture, but also a vibrant nightlife. You can drink the typical apple wine in the bars, but also cocktails at art openings. We will show you the spots in Frankfurt am Main that you shouldn’t miss.
The metropolis of Frankfurt is located in the center of Germany. It is an international, lively city that you can explore on foot. The German poet Goethe was born here, and if we stay with the literature topic, the famous Frankfurt Book Fair is held here once a year.
At the same time, Frankfurt is diverse and open to experimental off-spaces, for young artists and cultural workers, to a wide range of event formats outside the mainstream. Here you will discover inspiring, amazing, and unexpected things. Frankfurt has an urban lifestyle and down-to-earth tradition at the same time. Romantic alleys, fantastic museums, exciting discoveries, and innovative cuisine – you can experience it all in a single day.
Few cities are as easy to reach. Frankfurt am Main is located in the middle of Germany. And thus in the heart of Europe. How do you get here? Quite simply by plane, car, or sustainably by train. Frankfurt is very well connected. This makes the city not only an ideal destination for a short stopover but also the perfect starting point for a longer trip to Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region.
Relax, just do it
You can quickly reach the city center and feel the hustle and bustle. At the same time, you can be in the countryside in just a few minutes by bike, and thus in the middle of nature. Or you can slow down on the banks of the Main. In summer, the locals like to sit on the promenade and let their gaze wander over a cool drink. There is always action on the water: ships pass by and rowers pull past stand-up paddlers.
The Dönerboot – a Frankfurt icon – is moored on the banks of the Main in the Sachsenhausen district and supplies hungry people on the water and on land with delicious Turkish food. It’s a mini-vacation.
Sundowner
And how else do you satisfy your appetite? In the morning, an excellent coffee fresh from the barista. At lunchtime, it is recommended to walk past the stalls in the Kleinmarkthalle. In the evening, you should definitely try the traditional Frankfurt “green sauce“, a specialty made from seven different herbs that can be combined flexibly with numerous dishes.
And for a sundowner, the best thing is to head up to one of the many roof terraces. The highest rooftop bar in Germany is the NFT Skybar, on the 47th floor with a 360-degree view. The skyscrapers rise impressively above the city. In the background, the Taunus low mountain range appears. Not quite as high, but with an equally beautiful view of the skyline: the Occhio D’oro at the Flemings Selection Hotel.
A taste of Frankfurt culture
There is one thing that is a must: You need to try apple wine! This drink is a real experience and is firmly rooted in Hessian tradition. Only the juiciest apples are pressed and fermented for it. This is how the unmistakably refreshing flavor is created. Traditionally, apple wine is served in a “Bembel“, a typical Hessian stone jug. The wine is then drunk from a “Geripptes“, a glass with a diamond pattern.
The diversity of apple wine unfolds in the way it is enjoyed: pure for the purists, “sour spritzer” with a hint of mineral water, or “sweet spritzer” for a softer note. Each variant tells its own story.
Strolls
If you want to experience Frankfurt authentically, wander through the individual districts. Here you can experience the individual charm on a walk.
In Nordend
Gründerzeit buildings and boulevards with magnificent tree-lined avenues show that Nordend was built in the 19th century. Even then it was a popular residential area.
Today, you can still discover a varied street scene in Oeder Weg or Berger Straße. Unique boutiques, hip bars, innovative restaurants, and modern wine bars characterize the district and its lifestyle. You should visit Bethmannpark with its Chinese garden and the Holzhausenschlösschen.
In the Brückenviertel
The Brückenviertel is pure cosiness. It is not even one square kilometer in size and is located in the district of Sachsenhausen, south of the Main. Even the way to this district is an experience. If you stroll over Frankfurt’s Old Bridge, you will end up directly in Brückenstraße. The district is both hip and cozy. Typically Frankfurt. Here you will find vintage shops next to local designers with handmade unique pieces. Traditional apple wine bars are next to urban cafes. Here, time flies between arts and crafts, street food, and concept stores.
Meet me at the “Wasserhäuschen”
You should visit one of the “water houses“. They are called that because mineral water was sold here in the 19th century. The well water was undrinkable at the time. Today, there are still about 300 former sales outlets left. For example, the “Fein” in the city center with a living room charm in the countryside or the “Nox” in Sachsenhausen. The historic buildings are now kiosks and after-work meeting places in one.
Frankfurt will also amaze you, make you smile, help you discover new things and enjoy yourself. You can immerse yourself in the diversity of this city – for a day, a weekend, or a longer break. Frankfurt is the city where you take off as soon as you land here.
